Defying Boundaries

Writer: Hannah MathesonHannah Matheson

On April 26, we heard a conversation on home, homeland, and crossing the borders of genre featuring poet-novelists Waleed Bhatti & Emily Khilfeh interviewed by Nancy Huang & Marissa Davis, respectively.

Waleed Bhatti is a Pakistani-Canadian writer currently based in Queens, New York. He is an MFA candidate in Fiction at New York University. He has received graduate fellowships from NYU and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. He has a ginger cat named Sesame, who he has yet to feature in a story because she’s such a punk. He writes stories about transcendence, ghost dogs, and anything else that’s difficult to publish.

Emily Khilfeh is a Palestinian-American writer from Seattle, WA. She is a graduate of Pacific Lutheran University, and former fellow at the Bucknell Seminar for Undergraduate Poets. She was a shortlist finalist for the 2019 Palette Poetry prize and the 2019 Frontier Award for New Poets, and her work has been nominated for a Pushcart. Her poetry can be found at Up the Staircase Quarterly, Pinwheel Journal, Glass: a Journal of Poetry, and in the 2018 and 2019 Ghassan Kanafani Anthology.
